Glen Helen Nationals 5/23/09 : With the Supercross series all wrapped up, the Motocross Nationals roared in southern California. This year the Glen Helen track was ran backwards and it was rough. No, rough would be an understatement. Freakin’ wicked redonculously gnarly would be a better way to describe the track. The sun was shinning and there was a cool breeze that made for perfect conditions.

Jeremy Lusk Fundraiser/ On the Pipe 5 Premier : Jeremy Lusk's fundraiser was held at the Oakley Factory in Southern California. It was also the place for the new "On the Pipe 5" movie premier. This building looked like something out of the Bat Man Movie. One of the coolest buildings I've ever seen in my life.

As I sit here typing this out, I can’t believe what took place tonight. Ever since I heard the tragic news of Jeremy Lusk passing away, I’ve been totally bummed out. I can remember like it was yesterday when I first met him at Brian Deegan’s house…

Jeremy was calm and collected, yet showed confidence and determination. Once he started riding, I was in awe at the skill and talent he possessed as he backflipped and did amazing tricks 30 feet in the air. I walked up to him and asked him if he could hit the hip jump and he calmly said, “for sure.” Before I knew it, Jeremy was laying it flat, completely horizontal.

Once he got bored of that particular jump, he and the guys rode out into the rolling hills behind Deegan’s house where a huge, 5th gear natural terrain table top jump was located. Once Colin hit it, and almost crashed, Jeremy took off and hit this massive jump. He soared through the air and whipped it out, landing perfect like it was just another day, jumping small stuff.

Remembering all of this made me so sad and bummed out that such an awesome, talented and gifted rider passed away. He would never do what he loved again and his family and friends would never get to watch him do what he did best.

So when I sat down in my seat in the theater, I knew there was going to be a speech given in Jeremy’s behalf. Eric Apple took the stage and told everyone in the Metal Mulisha to take the stage with him. Eric then told the whole story; start to finish, about what had happened the day Jeremy crashed, and the events that followed.

Half way through his speech, Eric started to choke up, as well as the massive amount of people that gathered to listen. I had tears in my eyes just imagining being there with all of Jeremy’s loved ones, seeing him laying in that hospital bed, lifeless. Eric gathered his strength and finished his story, telling everyone that Jeremy is survived by not only his family, but the Metal Mulisha and the motocross industry as a whole. He will never be forgotten and will be in everyone’s hearts forever.

Upon finishing his speech, everyone rose to their feet and gave a tremendous round of applause. Everyone felt the same way. Not terrible sorrow of hearing the tragic news, but hope and appreciation of how blessed everyone was to have had Jeremy in their lives.

As the movie started, there was a tribute to Jeremy Lusk and the theater exploded with cheering, whistling and applause. We were stoked to know Jeremy passed away on the top of his career and will always be remembered. Throughout the movie, everyone was cheering and clapping as the riders in the film (most were in the audience) were throwing down ridiculously crazy and insane tricks. Doing what Jeremy loved, riding a dirt bike.

After the movie ended, there was a tribute to Jeremy and everyone as a whole rose to their feet, cheering and clapping as loud as they could. Yes, he is gone, but he left a legacy behind and everyone will never forget him. I am so grateful to have met Jeremy Lusk that Day at Brain Deegan’s. You will never be forgotten. Good Speed Jeremy Lusk. RIP

Transworld MX Dirt Days at Milestone MX Park : Last week, I had planned on waking up early, loading up my bike and gear, and heading down to Milestone to go ride. Little did I know, that I'd end up hurting my knee and ending my chance to rip it up all day.

I did however make the best of it.

Waking up early, and cruising down to dell taco, I picked up a greasy, but yet delicious, bacon and egg quesadilla and a orange juice. Strung Out blasting from the speakers in my truck, I cruised down Market St. in route to my destination.

Once arriving there, there were girls handing out stickers and fliers. The red Smiley face sticker had my name on it.

Finding a spot close to the action wasn't the easiest task, but it got handled. I grabbed my camera and backpack and set off to the track.

I spotted the Transworld MX booth and looked for Donn, but he wasn't there. The next booth over however, had Donn sitting on a brand spankin' new '09 CRF250R.

Donn looked to be getting his suspension dialed in by RG3 before taking it out on the track, so I cruised over to the main track.

It seemed like everyone I saw was fat and/or slow. My mind started to trip like a three legged dog on a frozen lake wondering why everyone was so slow.

A couple minutes in, the checkered flag came out and all the riders left, only to be replaced by guys grabbing a handful of throttle and pinning it to win it.

Now that's what I'm talking about. It's always easier to photograph someone that knows what they're doing.

I stayed out there for quite some time and shot a few hundred pictures before I went back to my truck to grab some water.

I heard some loud music blasting from huge speakers, and I knew the band was about to perform. While walking over there, I felt my back right pocket for my wallet and it was gone...

Panic started to set it. I frantically started patting my pockets down, desperately searching for my wallet....

A slew of words came out of my mouth I definitely wouldn't be saying at Christmas dinner...

Not good.

I started walking fast back out to the track and re walked my path of angles I was shooting from earlier.

Heart racing, thinking I'm totally screwed, I see something small and black by a jump.

Yes! Found it. So stoked.

I then checked the time and had to hurry back to the freestyle kicker and landing. I wasn't going to miss this.

They guys were getting ready and I was able to get a good spot for shooting.

So basically, those guys who do freestyle are either bat shit insane, have huge balls of steel, or both. I mean, No brains, no headache, right?

Once those guys had finished, I was ready to bail out. All in all, it was a good day and I got some cool shots.

Enjoy and any feedback would be great.

Thanks

Todd Stewart

Red Bull Experiment : Red Bull athlete Ronnie Renner logged a new Guinness World Record on Friday with his jump on the Santa Monica pier. His jump was the highest air ever on a motorcycle quarterpipe. Renner flew 59 feet 2 inches into the night sky in the third edition of the Red Bull Experiment. "More than 20,000 spectators gathered on the pier and the beach below to witness the history-making spectacle. Pushing limits and breaking boundaries is at the core of the Red Bull Experiment, which showcases the world's best athletes performing world-first, "experimental" sporting feats" (Red Bull PR).

Police Pursuit : Sitting in my living room, I hear the buzz of a helicopter flying low above my house. Not knowing what it might be, I run outside to get a better look. I see that the helicopter is a police chopper and is looking at the ravine in my neighbor’s back yard. This has happened once before, but only at night. I sprinted back to my room to grab my camera. I threw on my long lens and raced back outside.

I couldn’t see the suspect, but I knew he was close, as the helicopter wasn’t moving much and was focused on one spot. Then out of the corner of my eye, I see the assailant walking through my other neighbors back yard. I snap a picture and move closer to the other yard.

I look up and get a few shots of the helicopter buzzing over my head and then I look to my left, down my driveway, and the man is walking straight towards me. I didn’t know what to do, but I just kept shooting and backed away. He walked right by me and said in a humble, shaky voice, “Sorry Bro” and kept proceeding into the yard.

I couldn’t really believe what was going on, but right as I thought about that, the helicopter is yelling from a speaker for the man to freeze. Of course, the man didn’t and kept trekking. The helicopter then decides to land in my neighbors yard and spray the man with dirt and huge gusts from the propeller blades.

The suspect then kicks it into high gear, sprinting with his hands over his head and face to protect from the chaos that was going on. He jumped the fence and right when he did, I look to over my shoulder and two cop cars and a squad of officers are running with they’re guns drawn, screaming at me to go back in my house and stay safe.

There was no way I was going to miss intense action like this. I had an adrenaline rush like I was racing at the motocross track. I stepped back and let them run after the man. I could see in the distance, officers and police dogs were on the hunt. Five minutes had passed and the helicopter had landed in the field, pilot jumping out and running down a hill. They had caught the assailant and had him in custody.

The officers walked him back through the hills and up the same path the man had gone on before. They walked right through the back yard as my neighbor, with her dog on a leash, stated in a completely relaxed voice, “That was wild, wasn’t it?”

Up the road they walked. Breathing hard with sweat on their face, holding onto the mans arm, making sure he wouldn’t get away. His clothes were torn, dirty and blood stained, his face hung low. He was caught, and could do nothing more, but face whatever was coming to him.

Supercross Round 1 2008 : Before the race had even started I was worried It wasn't going to be a good race. Due to rain storms that were dumping large amounts of rain. which is good for local riding and ripping up the hills, it isn't so good for racing supercross.

The track was destroyed due to the rain fall and I knew it was going to be a "mudder" Luckily, the rain stopped that day and the guys at dirtwerx were able to groom the track as best they could and the riders were able to put on a great show.

I MAY be biased when shooting from the stands at an event, but I was totally STOKED that my boy Chad Reed kicked ass at the race. He didn't have the perfect race, but he made due and delivered. Congrats Chad!

Hope you like the photos, check them out and leave some comments, thanks.

KTM Test Track : I went out to the KTM test track, which is located in the hills of Corona California, right by the I-15 freeway, to shoot some pictures of a good friend, Austin Prescott. I rolled up a little early, (since I hate being late) to find that Nick Wey was still testing. I watched him do a few short motos before I went to talk to one of his guys.

They said it was cool to take some shots, so naturally, I was stoked, being an aspiring photographer and all. I shot some pictures and then Austin and I went to the Factory Yamaha track and watched Matt Lamoine do some laps.

Once I got a few shots through the fence, we proceeded to go up the hill and over to Honda's test track. We watched Gavin Gracyk rip up the track for a little. Andrew short was loaded up in his truck, so I unfortunately missed him do some motos.

I went back to the KTM track and shot some hard laps being put in. As the cloud cover started to kill the light shining down on the track, I Wished Austin some luck in Testing and I cruised home.
